A Full Circle Moment Cheyenne and Harley’s Surprise Proposal and Family Session

Some sessions mean a little more. Some feel like life coming full circle.

Cheyenne first reached out to me many years ago when I was just starting my photography business. Back then, I was still learning the ropes and figuring out what I was doing. She had just welcomed a brand new baby boy into the world — Waylon — and trusted me to photograph that sweet season of life. She was so kind, patient, and supportive during that session, something I’ll never forget.

After that, I followed along with her little family on social media for a while. I saw their life unfold — the joys, the growth, and unfortunately some tragic life events as well. Even though time passed and life took us in different directions (including me moving out of state), I always quietly wished the best for her and her family.

Fast forward to this year.

I moved back home and restarted my photography business, excited but also stepping back into a community I hadn’t photographed in for a while. When Cheyenne reached out for a model call, I immediately recognized her name. I’m not sure she realized it was the same photographer from all those years ago — but I remembered her.

This time she wasn’t a brand new mom with one baby.

She was a mom to a beautiful family of five.

Mom: Cheyenne
Dad: Harley
Waylon: 7
Whitley: 4
Walker: 2

I was already excited to capture this new chapter for her family, but just a few days later I received another message that made this session even more special.

Cheyenne’s sister reached out to me.

Harley wanted to propose to Cheyenne during the session and surprise her.

Cue the excitement.

From that moment on, her sister and I started secretly planning how we could make it happen while still keeping the session feeling natural and relaxed.

The Kids

Before every session, I ask families to tell me a little about their children so I can plan for their personalities. Cheyenne described them perfectly:

  • Waylon (7) – shy but full of energy

  • Whitley (4) – outgoing and funny

  • Walker (2) – very shy and doesn’t usually smile at strangers

Walker especially didn’t like being left out when it came to mom and dad, and Cheyenne warned me that he usually doesn’t smile for people he doesn’t know.

But kids always surprise you.

By the end of the session Walker was giggling and smiling so much, and it was the sweetest thing to watch.

The kids love playing outside — digging holes, driving trucks everywhere, and just being kids. Whitley, who is autistic, loves her sensory chair, her baby doll Joy, and Barbies. Seeing their personalities come out during the session made everything feel natural and joyful.

The Surprise

When the day of the session arrived, Cheyenne thought she was just coming for a normal family photo session.

But there was a whole crowd quietly waiting nearby to witness something special.

Her sister
Her sister’s husband
Their dog
Her best friend
Her mom

Everyone came to support and watch the moment Harley proposed.

And when it finally happened — it was perfect.

The joy, the surprise, the laughter… and a lot of happy tears.

Moments like that are exactly why I love what I do.

A New Chapter

Watching Cheyenne all these years later — surrounded by her children, her family, and the man who loves her enough to plan a surprise proposal during a photo session — felt incredibly special to capture.

It reminded me how powerful photography can be.

Years ago I photographed her as a new mom with a newborn baby.

Now I photographed her engagement with a beautiful family of five.

Life changes. Families grow. Seasons shift.

And sometimes, if you’re lucky, you get to witness those stories come full circle.

Cheyenne, Harley, Waylon, Whitley, and Walker — thank you for trusting me to capture this moment in your story.

It was truly an honor.
