Pensacola Beach with Allison and Family

There’s something really special about photographing people you’ve known long before they ever stepped in front of your camera.

I’ve known Allison for years through our local roller derby community, so getting to document this season of life for her family felt a little extra meaningful. When she filled out her questionnaire, she described Robin as “happy, a little reserved with new people, and loves to explore,” and mentioned that Nick isn’t exactly a fan of having his photo taken—especially if it feels posed. Honestly, I love walking into sessions like this, because they’re never about perfection… they’re about real connection.

And this session delivered exactly that.

We met out on the beach with soft skies and that gentle coastal breeze that seems to slow everything down just enough. Robin took her time at first, staying close, quietly observing—but it didn’t take long before her curiosity took over. Before we knew it, she was barefoot in the sand, exploring, laughing, and completely in her element—exactly how her mom had described.

Those are always my favorite moments to photograph. The in-between ones. The ones you can’t pose.

Nick may have started the session a little hesitant, but as we leaned into movement instead of stillness, everything shifted. Walking along the shoreline, spinning Allison in the surf, lifting Robin into the air—suddenly it wasn’t about “taking pictures” anymore. It was about being together. By the end, he wasn’t just cooperating… he was fully in it, laughing right alongside them.

And Allison—she has this warmth about her that just anchors everything. Whether she was wrapped up in a quiet moment or laughing with Robin, you can feel how deeply connected this family is.

What I loved most about this session is how it unfolded naturally. Nothing forced, nothing overly posed—just a family spending time together in a place Robin loves, doing the things they love.

It had been a while since they’d had formal photos taken, but honestly, these didn’t feel formal at all.

They felt like them.

And those are always the images that matter most.
